SAMSON
We had a request from a lady who had saved Samson from a kill pen in Texas. She sent him to a friend’s ranch but he didn’t do well in the heat. This beautiful boy was blind in one eye and now had heaves from the heat and humidity. His owner had him brought up to a lovely stable near Bend in Sunriver, Oregon. He did well there, but then they were shutting down and no horses were able to stay there. This lady asked if we would take Samson with some board money and we said yes. Years ago when we started Skydog we had taken a big Belgian draft from a kill pen called Biggie and sadly he was only with us a few months as he had brain tumors. I always said one day we would honor him by saving another so this seemed ideal.
When we went to pick him up however we found out he had a bonded friend called Willie and when we loaded him they were crying to each other and Willie was running the fence looking for his friend. In the Skydog Spirit of always keeping bonded friends together, we called members of the board and voted to take him too. So Willie and Samson live together at Skydog and make us happy all day long with their old man ways as they are both in their 20’s now. We honored Biggie double and so happy we did. #skydogsamson
UPDATE: Sadly Willie passed away this summer of old age and complications but his old friend Samson lives on and is having a wonderful retirement and doing well.
Mustangs & Burros Need Your Help
In addition to supporting our work by donating, becoming a patron on Patreon, or sponsoring a Skydog, there are several important pieces of legislation to protect American equines currently moving through Congress. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Rep and Senators and urge them to support these bills:
Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 3475 in the House / S.2307 in the Senate). This bill will shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.
The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 3656) This bill will prohibit the use of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft in the management of wild mustangs and burros on public lands, and require a report on humane alternatives to current management practices.
Ejiao Act of 2023 (H.R. 6021). To ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
You can Contact Members of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121, submitting contact forms on their individual websites, or sending one email to all three simultaneously at www.democracy.io
