Cheyenne is a beautiful sorrel overo (paint) mare born in 2015 and rounded up in Wyoming. Along with her friends, Snow and Sierra, she fell into the hands of an organized ring that breaks the law by selling mustangs from the BLM’s Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) for slaughter. Each member of this group adopted 4 horses and were paid $1000 in taxpayer dollars per mare to give them good homes. Instead, they bred them with a stallion to increase their weight for their meat price. With their names on the titles, we reported the adopters to the BLM to prevent them from adopting again, but there are so many awful people who do this. There has been an explosion of mustangs and burros appearing in kill pens that coincides with implementation of the AIP.
Three mares from three different herds in three different states met and bonded on this nightmarish journey from roundup to kill pen. We rescued them together and are so happy to be able to give them life-long refuge at Skydog. Cheyenne and Snow are pregnant, so we support them with specialized nutrition and veterinary care to bring healthy babies into their happy new world. When their time draws near, we will move the expecting mothers into the nursery to protect them, but for now we can give these three friends peace and space to settle. It will be an exciting and adorable spring when their foals arrive and form a New Moms Playgroup with Lacey and her newborn.
Cheyenne is the lead mare of this group. She came bolting out of the trailer when she arrived and led her friends up the hill to explore their woody enclosure. A stop at the fence to meet her new equine neighbors allowed her to read their happy, secure energy. Before long, she released and relaxed with a good roll in the mud, reconnecting herself and her baby with the natural world. We are looking forward to learning more about her as her personality emerges at Skydog.

Mustangs and burros need your help
In addition to supporting our work by donating, becoming a patron on Patreon or sponsoring a Skydog, there are several important pieces of legislation to protect American equines currently moving through Congress. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Rep and Senators and urge them to support these bills:
Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 3475 in the House / S.2307 in the Senate). This bill will shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.
The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 3656) This bill will prohibit the use of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft in the management of wild mustangs and burros on public lands, and require a report on humane alternatives to current management practices.
Ejiao Act of 2023 (H.R. 6021). To ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.
You can Contact Members of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121, submitting contact forms on their individual websites, or sending one email to all three simultaneously at www.democracy.io
