Goliath

Goliath is a senior band stallion from Salt Wells Creek, Wyoming. This herd, famous for its unique curly genetics, has been targeted to be zeroed out by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with no respect for this heritage. He was rounded up and separated from his family in October 2017 after 26 years of living free on the range. Like many people, we had followed him on the range and were devastated when he was removed. We asked for him to be re-released, but our request was denied and we were then shocked when he appeared on an internet adoption event in January 2018.

We decided that he should not be domesticated or spend the rest of this life in a tiny space - he was just too old, wild, special and BIG.  We agreed to the hundreds of requests we received to give him sanctuary and started a fundraiser.  Many people stood up to donate for him and bring him back to lands similar to the ones he roamed when free.

While we waited for the internet adoption, a wonderful woman in Colorado contacted us about his mare, Red Lady. She had her and wanted her to be reunited with her Goliath. The BLM granted us a reassignment and she travelled to Skydog.  Then we won the internet adoption for Goliath and an incredible reunion took place. Thanks to the Dodo, their reunion was captured in a short film we made, which has been seen by millions of people.

Pregnant with their last foal together, Red Lady delivered Bodhi in March 2018. Then we were contacted by another Colorado woman, who had Goliath’s daughter by another mare, Ember, and sent her to join her family.  This family is absolutely stunning, happy, and so close-knit. They will live free under the guidance of a breathtaking patriarch for the rest of their days.

Mustangs and burros need your help

In addition to supporting our work by donating, becoming a patron on Patreon or sponsoring a Skydog, there are several important pieces of legislation to protect American equines currently moving through Congress. It only takes a few minutes to contact your Rep and Senators and urge them to support these bills:

Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act of 2023 (H.R. 3475 in the House / S.2307 in the Senate). This bill will shut down the slaughter pipeline that sends some 20,000 American horses and donkeys to savagely monstrous deaths in foreign slaughterhouses every year.

The Wild Horse & Burro Protection Act of 2023 (H. R. 3656) This bill will prohibit the use of helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft in the management of wild mustangs and burros on public lands, and require a report on humane alternatives to current management practices.

Ejiao Act of 2023 (H.R. 6021). To ban the sale or transportation of ejiao, a gelatin made from boiling donkey skins, or products containing ejiao in interstate or foreign commerce, which brutally kills millions of donkeys primarily for beauty products and Chinese medicine.

You can Contact Members of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard (202) 224-3121‬, submitting contact forms on their individual websites, or sending one email to all three simultaneously at www.democracy.io
